Baud, Jean-pierre; Jolly, Christian.

Carbon Dioxide Biofixation and Production of Spirulina sp. LEB 18 Biomass with Different Concentrations of NaNO3 and NaCl BABT
Moraes,Luiza; Rosa,Gabriel Martins da; Souza,Michele da Rosa Andrade Zimmermann de; Costa,Jorge Alberto Vieira.
ABSTRACT Microalgae are efficient at using solar energy to turn CO2 and nutrients into biomass containing lipids, proteins, carbohydrates and other compounds that may be used to produce bioproducts for human and animal consumption and pharmaceutical use. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of the NaNO3 and NaCl concentration on the growth kinetics, the biomass composition and the ability to biofix CO2 using the microalga Spirulina sp. LEB 18. The assays were carried out according to a 22 central composite design (CCD) with different concentrations of NaNO3 (1.25, 1.88 and 2.50 g L-1) and NaCl (1.00, 15.0 and 30.0 g L-1). The assays were carried out in 2 L vertical tubular photobioreactors at 30°C, 12 h light/dark and an injection of 12.0% v/v of...

Foundational errors in the Neutral and Nearly-Neutral theories of evolution in relation to the Synthetic Theory: Is a new evolutionary paradigm necessary? Biol. Res.
Valenzuela,Carlos Y.
The Neutral Theory of Evolution (NTE) proposes mutation and random genetic drift as the most important evolutionary factors. The most conspicuous feature of evolution is the genomic stability during paleontological eras and lack of variation among taxa; 98% or more of nucleotide sites are monomorphic within a species. NTE explains this homology by random fixation of neutral bases and negative selection (purifying selection) that does not contribute either to evolution or polymorphisms. Purifying selection is insufficient to account for this evolutionary feature and the Nearly-Neutral Theory of Evolution (N-NTE) included negative selection with coefficients as low as mutation rate. These NTE and N-NTE propositions are thermodynamically (tendency to random...

Glacial-interglacial modulation of the marine nitrogen cycle by high-latitude O-2 supply to the global thermocline ArchiMer
Galbraith, Ed; Kienast, M; Pedersen, Tf; Calvert, Se.
An analysis of sedimentary nitrogen isotope records compiled from widely distributed marine environments emphasizes the global synchrony of denitrification changes and provides evidence for a strong temporal coupling of these variations to changes in nitrogen fixation as previously inferred. We explain the global coherence of these records by a simple physical control on the flux of dissolved oxygen to suboxic zones and the coupling to fixation via the supply of phosphorus to diazotrophs in suitable environments. According to our hypothesis, lower glacial-stage sea surface temperature increased oxygen solubility, while stronger winds in high-latitude regions enhanced the rate of thermocline ventilation. The resultant colder, rapidly flushed thermocline...

HLiN.
Pien, Sebastien; Maheux, Frank; Dedieu, Karine; Le Gendre, Romain; Simon, Benjamin; Gauquelin, Thibaut.

Preservation of Haemal Nodes Fixed by Means of Two Different Aldehyde Fixatives: a Scanning Electron Microscopic Study International Journal of Morphology
Guerrero,F; Cerutti,P; Marcaccini,A.
Glutaraldehyde is the fixative most commonly used in electron microscope studies of biological tissues, however it is often necessary to use samples which were not fixed in this fixative, even with the usual uncertainty of the results that may be obtained. The fixation is the more delicate step of the sample processing. Therefore in this work, the quality of preservation of haemal nodes fixed with two classic aldehyde fixatives: formaldehyde and glutaraldehyde we have compared under the scanning electron microscope. Our results showed that both fixatives were successful in preserving the morphology of haemal nodes components; however glutaraldehyde conferred satisfactory results mainly in the preservation of parenchymal cells, whereas formaldehyde was...

Martin, Jean-louis; Haure, Joel; Dupuy, Beatrice; Nourry, Max; Palvadeau, Hubert; Papin, Mathias; Penisson, Christian; Thouard, Emmanuel.

Testing the effectiveness of tough resin systems for improving structural performance of joints in GRP ships. ArchiMer
Norwood, L; Caulier, C.
A major concern in any composite structure is its ability to resist peel and shear loading; this becomes a more difficult problem where long delays in laminating have occurred or when dissimilar materials are joined together. In the case of mine countermeasure vessels, adhesion between stiffener and hull becomes critical when the ship is subjected to underwater shock loading. In order to reduce costs and improve the hull-stiffener bond, tough resin systems based on urethane acrylates have been developed to replace the mechanical crack-stopping system currently employed. This paper describes the benefits of urethane acrylates in the frame-hull application discussing the level of improvement over the mechanical system.
